SUMMARY OF SERVICES TO PRISONERS
The Law Library does not provide assistance with legal research or advice for legal problems.
The Law Library does provide copies of court records and other legal information for a fee. Complete citations to the materials must first be received. Please note the following examples:

Complete case citation (volume, name, page number)
Example:       435 So.2d 1059

Titles or numbers of statutes (laws)
            Example:       R.S. 14:16

Case records: Defendant, court level, date of court record, & docket number
Example:       State of Louisiana v. Joe Smith, 4th Circuit Court of Appeals,
            July 17, 2000, 00-KA-1460

You must give the Court of Appeal or Supreme Court Docket number, not the district court docket number. The LSU Law Library only makes available copies of Louisiana Supreme Court and Louisiana appellate court level court records. We do not have trial records unless they were included as part of the records in the upper courts.

The total number of pages requested will be counted and then a letter explaining payment costs will be sent to you. There is a charge of $.15 per page plus a $2.00 service charge for copies sent. You must pay for the entire amount due when requested. There can be no waiver of fees or refunds for anyone.

The Library can copy only entire volumes. We are unable to copy sections of records. If you do not want the entire volume but rather need copies of only specific sections, you must send a representative to the Law Library to perform the photocopying. Your representative will be able to copy the records at six cents per page, and there will be no service charge. Do not send someone until you receive a letter confirming that the Law Library has the case record. Your representative will also need to call prior to his/her visit so that we can arrange to have the record available.

Please do not send any money until a letter containing payment information is received. You may send a check or money order, payable to the LSU Law Library, for the exact amount of payment. As soon as payment is received, the requested materials will be sent.
